Platform signs to change

Metra has changed the signs at the head of platforms at Ogilvie, LaSalle Street and Union Station to eliminate a source of frustration for customers. The signs had been pre-programmed to coordinate with the scheduled departure of trains. They would start to announce a train is boarding 10 to 20 minutes before the scheduled departure time. That worked as long as the train arrived at the platform before the announcement appeared. However, sometimes the signs announced a train was boarding before it made it to the platform. Instead of announcing that a train is boarding, starting in January the signs simply will indicate that a train is on time or delayed. This will eliminate the confusion and aggravation caused when a sign says a train is boarding even though it has not yet arrived at the platform. If we expect a train to depart on time, even if it is not yet at the platform, the sign will indicate the train is on time. If the train will not have time to reach the platform, board customers and depart as scheduled, the sign will indicate the train is delayed until the train arrives, when the sign will then be changed to boarding.
