Janice R. Thomas was named the Senior Division Director of Diversity and Civil Rights in August 2016. In this role, she is responsible for administrative oversight and management of EEO/diversity initiatives, business diversity and civil rights.
Prior to her position as, Senior Division Director of Diversity and Civil Rights, Thomas was the Senior Director of the Office of Business Diversity and Civil Rights for six years. In this role, she managed a 12-member team responsible for DBE certification, contract and labor compliance, community outreach and the Title VI program. She also worked directly with the procurement department to ensure that the organization achieved diversity and inclusion efforts in its contracting process.
Thomas has more than 19 years of experience in government with a concentration in supplier diversity. She began her career as a compliance coordinator for the Illinois Department of Central Management Services (CMS) in 1997. Prior to joining Metra, she worked for the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) as the minority and female business enterprise coordinator in the purchasing division.
Thomas holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Chicago State University, she is a certified professional public buyer (CPPB), and a professional member of the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP). She has also served as an honorary co-chair for the 2009 Minority Business Development Agency-MED Council of Chicago. She is a graduate of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Leadership Program for executive professionals and recently completed the Eno Transit Senior Executive Program.
