Metra Police Make Arrest in Armed Robbery

(February 12, 2009) -

Metra police have arrested a Chicago man and charged him with armed robbery in connection with the Jan. 29 assault of a Metra passenger at the 83rd Street/Avalon Park station of the Metra Electric District line. Charged was Sterling McNight, 18, of 8126 S. Ellis.

In the Jan. 29 assault, a 59-year-old woman reported that a man walked up behind her while she was waiting for a train at about 7:30 a.m., grabbed her cane, displayed a knife and demanded her money. When she said she had no money, he grabbed her purse, emptied it on the ground, grabbed her wallet and fled. The woman was not physically harmed and was able to provide police with a description of the suspect.

On Feb. 9, a Metra police officer saw a man matching the suspect’s description walking near the station. The man was taken to Chicago Police Department Area 2 where during questioning by a Metra Detective and Area 2 Property Crime Detectives he admitted that he had robbed the woman. He was then formally charged with armed robbery.

In separate investigations, Metra Police and Chicago Police are still searching for suspects involved in attacks on women walking alone near Metra’s 63rd Street and 75th Street stations. The suspect in four attacks near 63rd Street, including one sexual assault, is described as a black male, 20-25 years old, 5-foot-8 to 5-feet-10, 150 to 170 pounds, with brown eyes, black hair, a medium complexion and crooked teeth on the upper left side of his mouth. The suspect in a sexual assault at 75th Street is described as a black male, 5-foot-10 to 6 feet, 200 to 220 pounds with a light complexion, heavy build, black curly hair and a full beard.

Persons with information that could lead to an arrest in any of the incidents that occurred near Metra’s 63rd and 75th Street stations should contact Chicago Police Area Two Detectives at (312) 747-8273.
