Metra to host DBE Certification workshop on March 27, 2014

(March 5, 2014) -

Metra’s Office of Business Diversity & Civil Rights will host a FREE Certification Workshop for small minority and/or women-owned businesses on Thursday, March 27, 2014 from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  The Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) workshop will be held at Metra headquarters located at 547 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, 2nd Floor.

This workshop is designed for small business owners, construction firms, professional service firms and suppliers.  Participants will be guided through the initial DBE certification application process.  Metra certified DBE firms are ensured equal opportunity to receive and participate in Metra contracts.

“There are numerous lucrative contract opportunities at Metra and we want everyone who wants to do business with Metra to have a fair chance,” said Janice Thomas, senior director, Office of Business Diversity & Civil Rights.  “We are here to help. The process and paperwork can be overwhelming and that is why we assist in every way possible.  Ensuring strong minority participation in the process is our mission and priority.”

Metra’s DBE program was established in 1984. Since that time, the program has made numerous strides in creating an equal playing field for small, minority, and women-owned businesses. Over the past 30 years, Metra’s DBE program has sponsored and participated in hundreds of workshops, training sessions, and exhibitor fairs that provide access and opportunities for small, minority, and women-owned businesses throughout Illinois.

The DBE program has received several awards for accomplishments, including the “Friend of the Chamber Award” from the Cosmopolitan Chamber of Commerce for efforts of small business inclusion made in the community.

Through tireless work and outreach in the community, Metra has certified hundreds of firms as DBE’s and graduated several firms from the program.  Some of these firms have since become prime contractors providing opportunities for other small, minority, and women-owned businesses.  Since 2008, $112 million has been committed to the DBE participation and 516 Metra contracts have been awarded to DBE firms.  More than 220 DBE firms are registered with Metra.
