Please accept our sincere apologies for the long delays on the UP Northwest Line on Tuesday evening.
Restoring service following a train-pedestrian fatality is complex, as it involves the local municipality, Metra/Union Pacific Police and the County Coroner. In most cases, train traffic is not allowed to resume until we receive clearance from the local authorities who are in charge of the investigation. We work with them to stress the importance of reopening our tracks as soon as possible, however, they still remain the ultimate authority on the resumption of service. The timing of this incident meant that a greater number of riders were impacted.
This investigation was time-consuming and complicated by the fact that the incident happened on the middle track of three tracks, making it difficult to open even one track for train operations. Because we were not in charge of the investigation, it was difficult for us to communicate accurate estimates of how long it would take to get the trains moving again.
We know this was very frustrating, but be assured Metra made every effort to restore service as quickly as possible. Again, we are sincerely sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
