Glenview Road and Chestnut Avenue rail crossings to be closed for construction

(September 2, 2020) -

The rail crossings at Glenview Road and Chestnut Avenue just east of Lehigh Avenue on the Metra Milwaukee District North Line will be closed in the coming weeks for separate construction projects.

Chestnut Avenue will be closed at the tracks to vehicular traffic for three days beginning Wednesday, Sept. 9 and ending Friday, Sept. 11, to allow for track repairs at this location. Detour signs will be posted, and motorists are also advised to use Lehigh Avenue and Waukegan Road to cross the tracks at Lake Avenue.

From Wednesday, Sept. 16 until Friday, Sept. 25, the Glenview Road vehicular crossing will be closed and out of service for crossing replacement and track resurfacing. Detour signs will be posted advising motorists to use Dewes Street to cross the tracks. Motorists traveling east on Glenview Road should take Harlem/Lehigh Avenue to Dewes Street and motorists traveling west on Glenview should take Waukegan Road to Dewes Street.

Crossing projects generally include the removal and replacement of rails, ties, ballast, rubber panels and asphalt and are part of the regularly scheduled maintenance of Metra’s assets. Crossing renewals provide a smoother ride for motorists and ensure the continued safety of railroad operations.
