Central Avenue rail crossing on Chicago’s Northwest Side to be closed for construction

(October 15, 2020) -

The rail crossing at Central Avenue in Chicago’s Edgebrook neighborhood on the Metra Milwaukee District North Line will be closed beginning Wednesday, Oct. 21 for replacement of the crossing and track work.

From Wednesday, Oct. 21 until Friday, Oct. 30, Central Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic at the tracks to allow for replacement of the road crossing and track resurfacing. Detour signs will be posted.

Motorists traveling north on Central Avenue are advised to take Lehigh Avenue to Caldwell Avenue to cross the tracks and return to Central Avenue. South bound traffic will be detoured to Caldwell Avenue to Lehigh Avenue to cross the tracks and return to Central Avenue. Devon Avenue is also a recommended detour route for travel in both directions.

Crossing projects generally include the removal and replacement of rails, ties, ballast, rubber panels and asphalt at the crossing and are part of the regularly scheduled maintenance of Metra’s assets. Crossing renewals provide a smoother ride for motorists and ensure the continued safety of railroad operations.
