Bridge project affects Metra Electric and South Shore service

(October 26, 2018) -

Construction of a pedestrian bridge at 41st Street will disrupt Metra Electric and South Shore Line service beginning late Saturday night, Nov. 3 through early Sunday morning, Nov. 4, Metra announced today. Four trains will be replaced with bus service from 51st/53rd Street to Millennium Station, while four others will be canceled. And there will be no service – bus or rail – at six stations (Van Buren, Museum Campus, 18th Street, McCormick Place, 27th Street and 47th Street) between 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

The changes are necessary because the electricity to the overhead wires that power the Metra Electric Line and South Shore trains must be shut off for the bridge project. The shutoff will allow city of Chicago crews to safely remove the temporary structure that has been supporting the bridge while it was being built over the tracks.

Late Saturday inbound trains

  • Metra Electric South Chicago Branch Train 8338, which is normally scheduled to arrive at Millennium at 12:16 a.m., is canceled.
  • Metra Electric Train 838, which is normally scheduled to arrive at Millennium at 12:49 a.m., and South Shore Train 510, which is normally scheduled to arrive at Millennium at 11:43 p.m., will operate only as far as 51st/53rd Street. Passengers will then board designated CTA buses at the northeast corner of Lake Park Avenue and 51st Street, immediately west of the tracks, and will be bused directly to Millennium Station. Click here for a map of the bus stop location. Metra personnel will be at the station to direct passengers to the buses. There will be no train or bus service to 47th Street, 27th Street, McCormick Place, 18th Street, Museum Campus and Van Buren.
