Mr. Ryan was appointed Chief Transportation Officer in September 2014. In this capacity, he is responsible for commuter operations on Metra owned and operated lines as well as those operated under purchase of service agreements with the BNSF and Union Pacific railroads. Prior to taking on the responsibility for Metra’s Transportation Division, Mr. Ryan had been the agency’s Chief Mechanical Officer since 2011.
Mr. Ryan currently oversees a staff of nearly 800 transportation employees. This includes train crews, dispatchers, station agents, GPS Center operators, rules and regulatory compliance.
Mr. Ryan started his railroad career in 1979 and has worked as an electrical apprentice, electrician, foreman, shop superintendent, director, senior director and chief mechanical officer. He has spent the last 21 years managing different mechanical facilities within the Metra system and has worked on all three Metra-owned districts. He is familiar with Metra’s day-to-day operation as well as its rebuild and overhaul programs.
