SENIOR CAR INSPECTOR

General Responsibilities: 

  • Monitors daily mechanical failures for delays caused by mechanical failures. 
  • Monitors and updates the Bad Order Report and assists with any issues pertaining to the Bad Order Report. 
  • Performs field inspections on locomotives, coaches, mechanical equipment and mechanical facilities for compliance with Federal RR Administration (FRA) regulations Code of Federal Regulations, defective or unsafe conditions, and cleanliness. 
  • Performs audits on Event Recorder time changes on assigned districts. 
  • Maintains a database containing freight car inspection dates, IDT air test dates, car type and location information and other relevant information that pertains to Metra’s fleet of freight cars.
  • Coordinates maintenance schedules for freight equipment.
  • Responsible for the safety objectives, goals and program of the organization, ensuring compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations.  Promotes safe work practices as well as maintains and fosters a safe work environment.
  • May be responsible for all other duties and /or responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications: 

  • Qualified Applicants will possess a high school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Must possess four (4) years experience as a railroad mechanic/journeyman OR an Engineering degree from a recognized college or university OR other related railroad management experience. 
  • Must have hands-on knowledge and understanding of Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal RR Administration (FRA) regulations.
  • Must have a working knowledge of functional repairs as well as trouble-shooting and maintaining rolling stock and facilities. 
  • Must have experience in planning work and analyzing/evaluating results. 
  • A/C certification preferred. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license. 
  • Personal computer skills preferred.
