"Quiet Car" Program Update


Metra’s “Quiet Car” Program has been in effect since June 6th. Over the past few weeks we have been working out some of the issues associated with the release of the system-wide program. Metra asks that you be patient as we address some of the concerns noted by our customers. As requested, there will be more signage on-board the “Quiet Cars.” There will also be more on-board announcements on trains with “Quiet Cars.” These announcements will also include a friendly reminder from the Conductor as he collects fares. Automated platform announcements regarding “Quiet Car” protocol will also be added as a reminder to passengers prior to boarding.

If a passenger is not complying with the “Quiet Car” policy, please politely remind your fellow passenger that they are in a “Quiet Car.” If the passenger continues to violate the “Quiet Car” policy, trainmen are to discreetly give the passenger a “Quiet Car” business card which encourages a lowering of volume. While our goal is to keep cars as quiet as possible, passengers should not expect the car to be completely silent.

“Quiet Cars” are in effect on all weekday trains arriving in downtown terminals before 9:00 a.m. and departing downtown terminals between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

  • On trains with six or more cars, the designated Quiet Cars are the second car from the cab car and the second car from the locomotive.
  • On trains with five or fewer cars, the designated Quiet Car is the second car from the engine only.
  • On the Metra Electric, the third car from the south end is the designated “Quiet Car”.
  • There is no “Quiet Car” on trains fewer than two cars.

Passengers in Quiet Cars are asked to:

  • Turn off the ringer on your cell phone and mute electronic devices.
  • If passengers must answer their phones, they should make it brief or move to the vestibule or another car.
  • Conversations between passengers are discouraged; If they must be held, they should be brief and in subdued voices.
  • If you are using headphones, please make sure the volume is low and that it cannot be heard by other passengers.

Again, while our goal is to keep cars as quiet as possible, passengers should not expect the car to be completely silent.

As always, Metra hopes all passengers will remember to treat their fellow passengers with courtesy and respect, no matter where they are sitting.
