LaSalle Street Station has a long history. The first station on the site, near LaSalle and Van Buren streets, opened in 1852. It was rebuilt 14 years later in 1866, only to be rebuilt again after it was burned to the ground in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. It was rebuilt again in 1903, and that station stood until 1981, when a new commuter terminal was constructed behind and under a new Chicago Stock Exchange high-rise.
The 1903 building was a major intercity rail facility that served some of America’s most illustrious train routes, including the 20th Century Limited and the Rocky Mountain Rocket. It was also used in Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest and later in the 1973 movie The Sting, staring Robert Redford and Paul Newman.
