Safety is Metra’s number one priority and that's why we remain proactive in reinforcing the importance of railroad safety by continuing our ongoing public awareness activities at schools. As always, we welcome and appreciate any active involvement and support in this effort.

There is a need for reinforcement of safety messages because today’s children are besieged by conflicting messages from their friends, videogames and television. Therefore it is critical to keep safety at the forefront of their minds.

For the fourth straight year, Metra invited students, teachers and parents to participate in our annual School Safety Campaign. This year’s initiative again featured the distribution of the popular pencil case kits to elementary school students across the region and also included delivery of safety posters to area schools. These posters were designed by students and represent the winning entries from Metra’s Inaugural Safety Poster Contest. You'll find samples to the left; click on any of the thumbnail pictures to see a larger view.

Operation LifeSaver presentations also continue to be offered. To schedule a presentation, or to find out more, contact Tom McNamara at 312.287.3468. For more information on Operation LifeSaver and its mission, click here.

We hope to work together as a community to support parents and educators as they teach our children that obeying safety laws is a matter of life and death. We at Metra are pleased to continue assisting schools in this important endeavor.

NEVER walk or play along the tracks. It is illegal and could result in serious injury or death.
NEVER cross the tracks when the gates are down or when the signal indicates that a train is coming. Flashing lights and ringing bells mean STOP and wait for the train to pass.
ALWAYS cross the tracks at designated locations only.
ALWAYS look both ways and use extreme caution.
