Extra train service for July 3 downtown activities
Chicago, June 29, 2006 - Metra will provide extra train service to accommodate those planning to attend the Grant Park fireworks celebration on Monday, July 3, traditionally the commuter railroad's busiest day of the year.
All lines except the Heritage Corridor will have extra service, featuring late afternoon inbound and post-fireworks outbound trains. Special schedules are available on trains and posted at stations.
Trains are likely to be very crowded and require longer loading times en route. After the fireworks, passengers should expect much slower boarding at downtown stations and unloading at outlying stations as train crews take extra time to ensure everyone's safety.
To promote a pleasant and safe experience for riders attending the fireworks display, Metra will ban all alcoholic beverages and glass containers on trains; all carry-on baggage will be subject to inspection before boarding; and trains and downtown stations will be patrolled by Metra police and security officers.
Riders can take advantage of a special two-day pass for $5, offering unlimited-rides on both July 3 and July 4. This special fare includes free transportation for three children under age 12, per fare-paying adult. Because of much heavier ridership than usual during this holiday period, Metra recommends that commuters buy tickets before boarding if possible.
